Designs Submitted: Plot H4 of Elephant Park

Lendlease has submitted plans for Plot H4 of the redevelopment of the Heygate Estate in Elephant and Castle.

The scheme, known as Elephant Park, is currently being built with plots to the South of the masterplan nearing completion, and others fronting the Walworth Road rising fast.

Plot H4 sits along the New Kent Road, and is immediately East of Elephant One, the recently completed scheme with the new Sainsbury’s on the ground floor.

When complete, the plot will make up one of three New Kent Road fronting plots, and will also front the new park.

AHMM has drawn the designs, which feature both a mansion block in a courtyard and a tower. The mansion block will be clad in brick, with various shades and patterns used but a with a checkerboard theme uniting much of the plot.

Metal balconies will be provided for the apartments, although the New Kent Road frontage largely lacks these – likely as the noise and pollution from this road isn’t ideal for residential amenity.

The twenty-five storey tower takes a different design approach, with a metallic appearance that appears to be in part inspired by art-deco in its detailing. This is evident in the crown, featuring arrow-head shapes protruding from the top apartments.

In total there’s 445 apartments provided in this plot, of which 354 will be for the private market. 48 are proposed for shared ownership, and 43 for affordable rent. The majority of the apartments have one or two bedrooms, with a spattering of studios and three bed units.

In addition there’s 2,320sqm of retail space, some of which will be provided as affordable retail.
